I have recently been asked about how to count BPM when practicing. Well in all honesty there is no real way of doing this. You are only human so you will stray in and out of time naturally. Personally I use a metronome I bought from Guitar Center. They are quite cheap, I got mine for $15.

What I do, is I have Roland PM-10 monitor and downloaded a metronome app on my android phone. I hook the sound out from my phone into the line in on my monitor and set off the metronome. Works great!
